arding St.Mawes Cornwall SUP

In 2008 I started SUP in small waves and on flat water and didn't really think much more of Stand up paddling in waves than a 'small wave tool'. However, in March 2014, after breaking my favourite longboard, I decided I would give SUP surfing another go. Since then I've been hooked, and on the scout for a good all round performing SUP surf board. I found there was very little out there in the way of unbiased reviews so as I started trying a few boards out I thought I would make some notes here!

I would say I'm a good recreational wave paddler, and of reasonable surf fitness. I'm 12.5 stone and 5'8" tall. Generally wave board trials have been on the beach breaks on the North Cornish coast, and flat water paddle sessions on the estuaries of the south Cornish rivers and creeks, with the odd down wind run!

Over the last couple of years we've been lucky enough to try out a wide array of boards.

Mainly wave and all round boards, but some touring kit as well. Below are some reviews, with more to follow.

If these are in anyway helpful to you then please Like us on facebook.

We are a mobile paddle board school in mid Cornwall, and although not retailers, often have our personal kit for sale, but also have excellent links with some top class shops in Cornwall as well as further afield. We are always happy to give impartial advice on buying (or selling) kit.

Happy SUPing!!!

What a contrasting week we have had here at Get on Board SUP...

Luke entered the Watergate Bay 'Legend of the Bay' competition over the weekend, and although Cornwall delivered some thumping surf, the winter of super early morning SUP surf sessions have really pai...

Starboard Element 9'8

When people ask advice about buying a SUP, the common brief, is they want something that does a bit of everything. They want to be able to flat water paddle for fitness and leisure and ride a few waves. I got hold of an old one of these at the sta...

Nahskwell Longboard 10'0

I approached the UK importer of Nahskwell to try some boards. Despite me protesting that I wasn't looking for this kind of board, and looking to progress down into the circa 9 foot catergory, Jon at Kai Sports was adamant that I try this board,...

Nahskwell Surf Pro 9'2

This is one of the first short board inspired shapes I've tried. That’s not to say I've not paddled shorter SUP's, but normally they have been round nosed. If you're not sure what the difference is, I've found that with round nosed boards when pa...

Starboard 7''11

This board is 120 litres, so given its length, Starboard have packed a lot of volume into such a small shape. When you pick this board up, it feels small. However, the volume in the rails makes it surprisingly stable, I found paddling out in surf up to...

Starboard Pocket Rocket 8'5

My background in surfing is mainly limited to longboards and mid length retro egg/fish shapes, the shape of this board really appealed to me, with a nice pulled in pin tail for super stylish turns, yet a nice big round nose which is just scr...

Nahskwell 9'7 Well (2016 update this is now called a 'fit)

Nahskwell are a Brittany based manufacturer of SUP, and I guess the appeal for me was the fact they may design their boards with similar conditions in mind to us, down here in Cornwall. I love the look of many...

The 'Ultimate' Blend...

We bought our first Stand up paddle board in 2008. Back then Starboard only made a small handful of boards, and ours was called 'The Ultimate Blend', billed as the board to do a bit of everything on. It was 11"2 long and 30 wide, based on a clas...
